Approximately 65 children and their families filled Main Street with red, white and blue Friday morning during the annual Pershing County 4-H Kiddie Parade, celebrating Independence Day weekend and America’s 250th birthday.
Children rode bicycles and pulled wagons, while others walked the parade route waving American flags. Spectators lined the sidewalks as participants marched from the depot to the Pershing County Courthouse.
Many of the participating families came from U.S. Silica. The local Girl Scouts also had a strong presence in the parade.
The Pershing County 4-H Community Club and the Pershing County Cattle Women sponsored and organized the event.
After the parade, families gathered at the courthouse for a community barbecue. The Lovelock Lions Club, Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen and Lisa Allen donated and cooked the meal. The Pershing County Cattle Women handed out Otter Pops, commemorative ornaments and a 50-cent piece to each child.
Community organizations and volunteers contributed throughout the event. June and David Talcott provided the public address system and announced the parade participants.
Members of the Lovelock Fire Department, joined by Sparky the Fire Dog, participated in the parade and posed for photos with children afterward.
Officers from the Lovelock Police Department and the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office led the parade route and temporarily closed Main Street to help ensure participants could safely reach the courthouse.
Volunteers Jack Hursh, Gary Nance, Kristen Burr and her family, Amanda Burrows, Andrea Burrows and many others helped register participants, distribute American flags, walk with the children and keep the event running smoothly.
During registration, families also signed thank-you cards for those who supported the parade.
“We absolutely loved participating in the parade to celebrate America’s 250th birthday,” said Bobbie Roybal. “Every year, Evie dresses in patriotic attire, and we watch the parade. This was her first year participating in the parade, and she had so much fun with her Girl Scout sisters.”
