As part of the 2026 Lovelock Frontier Days celebration, July 31 through Aug. 2, the Silver Mountain Sidewinders Horseshoe Club will host a benefit horseshoe tournament Saturday, Aug. 1, at McDougal Field to raise money for the family of Brandon MacDougall, a Lovelock native who died unexpectedly in May at the age of 40.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., with play to follow. Organizers said the event is not a sanctioned tournament, and whether singles, doubles or both will be played will depends on the number of participants.
The club hopes to raise $1,000 for the MacDougall family. According to organizers, Deana Davidson has already donated $100 toward the fundraiser.
Born and raised in Lovelock, MacDougall earned a mining engineering degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2010 and spent more than 16 years working in Nevada’s mining industry. He is survived by his wife, Ermelinda; daughters Scarlett, 9, and Zoey, 7; his parents, Steve and Mij MacDougall; and his sister, Courtney MacDougall.
The tournament will also highlight several recent improvements to McDougal Field’s horseshoe facility. Club members completed much of the work themselves, while the Pershing County Recreation Board funded the improvements and added money to the tournament purse.
Recent upgrades include two additional water hydrants, water lines for future tree planting, an upgraded shade roof, four additional horseshoe pits and two new 70-foot sections of fencing.
David Skoglie said several members of the Silver Mountain Sidewinders knew MacDougall personally and wanted to hold the fundraiser as a way to support his family during a difficult time.
