The Pershing County Mustangs got an early start on preparations for the upcoming football season by hosting a summer camp and scrimmage sessions at Pershing County High School.
Head coach Mike Brooks said summer camps have long been an important part of the program's preseason schedule, giving players valuable opportunities to develop their skills and gain live repetitions before official practices begin.
Brooks said assembling the team during the summer has become increasingly challenging as student-athletes balance jobs, family commitments, other sports and summer activities.
"With the kids being pulled in so many directions, spring and summer practices can be challenging," Brooks said.
When the team's traditional summer camp opportunities were unavailable this year, the Mustangs adapted by inviting two other schools to Lovelock for a series of scrimmages and practice sessions.
The teams completed five live scrimmage periods, along with situational drills and seven-on-seven competition. Brooks said the format gave coaches an opportunity to evaluate players while allowing the team to compete against unfamiliar opponents.
"It was excellent for us," he said.
Brooks thanked the visiting schools for making the trip and helping the Mustangs prepare for the upcoming season. He also expressed appreciation to school staff members for opening the facilities and assisting with the event.
