Mustang Youth Team represents community at national prevention summit
MYT members travel to Orlando this week: Joshua Elerick, Magdalena Ramirez, Carlos Hernandez, Gerardo Ramirez, Austin Gallagher, Marisa Ramirez, Mya Gauvin, Millie Canchola, LaReina Ramirez, Lillian Wagner, Tina Gallagher.

The Mustang Youth Team is in Orlando, Florida, this week, learning alongside young leaders from across the country at the 25th annual Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America Mid-Year Training Institute.

The five-day conference, held July 12 to 16 at the Gaylord Palms, brings together youth teams, coalition members and prevention specialists for training focused on reducing substance misuse and strengthening communities.

After arriving safely in Orlando, with both the team and its luggage accounted for, the local students began a packed schedule of workshops, presentations and leadership activities.

During the first day, team members heard from prevention specialists and attended sessions designed to give young people practical tools they can use at home. The students studied the “7 C’s of Prevention” and learned community-mapping techniques that can help identify local strengths, needs, resources and areas where additional prevention work may be needed.

The training is intended to help young leaders better understand the factors that influence substance use and develop community-based approaches to prevention.

Between sessions, the Mustang Youth Team also had time to explore, share plenty of laughs and build stronger relationships with one another. Organizers said the team-building experiences are an important part of helping students grow into confident leaders who can work together effectively after they return home.

The national institute gives the students an opportunity to exchange ideas with other youth groups, hear how prevention programs are working in communities around the country and bring new strategies back to their own schools and neighborhoods.

The conference’s 2026 theme is “Powered by Purpose.” This year’s event is also supporting Fentanyl Free America, a national initiative centered on protection, prevention and support.

With the first day complete, the Mustang Youth Team was looking forward to several more days of training, new experiences and opportunities to proudly represent the community on a national stage.
