A local pickleball court is now open and ready for play after the original surface had to be removed and replaced because of problems with the first installation.
The court was initially constructed last year using Recreation Board funds. According to information provided about the project, the board hired a local contractor without a formal contract or inspection process. A Recreation Board member was later hired to apply the rubberized playing surface, despite having no previous experience with that type of installation.
The finished surface was uneven and wavy, creating concerns about player safety and leaving the court effectively unusable.
Mayor Wilcox later took the lead in finding a company that specializes in pickleball court construction and surfacing. The Recreation Board ultimately paid to have the work completed a second time.
Although the repairs required additional public funds, officials said the experience provided an important lesson about using written contracts, qualified contractors and proper inspections for publicly funded projects.
The reconstructed court is now complete and has a smooth, professional playing surface. After a difficult start, the community now has a safe and attractive pickleball court.
