Mustangs Open Track Season at Fernley Meet

The Pershing County High School track and field team opened its season at the Fernley Sticker Meet, competing against nine other schools. The Mustang girls finished seventh with 31 points, while the boys placed fifth with 43.26 points.

The meet gave the Mustangs an early look at several freshmen and first-year athletes who made an immediate impact alongside returning competitors.

Pershing County’s sprint relay teams continued to be a strength. The boys 4x200-meter relay team of Ashton Jimenez, Anthony Gibson, Quinton McKinney and Aaron Zelaya captured first place, while the girls team of Khloe Montes, Ali Montes, Camila Garcia and Chealse Woodard finished a close second. Two freshmen, Ali Montes and Camila Garcia, were part of the girls relay squad.

Several underclassmen also delivered strong performances. First-year athlete Jaxson Happy placed third in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 4 inches and also ran well in the open 200-meter dash.

Elijah Dickerman threw over 30 feet in the shot put, while Dickerman and Quinton McKinney both cleared 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump.

Freshman Nathan Ortega posted a time of 5:52 in the mile before returning on short rest to run a 57.09 in the 400 meters, currently the fastest time in the 2A North this season.

On the girls side, Chealse Woodard won the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 7½ inches, tying for the best jump in the 2A this year. Anthony Gibson also turned in a strong performance in the 300-meter hurdles and is currently ranked second in the 2A in that event.

The Mustangs will next compete at the Elks Invitational on March 21 at Churchill County High School in Fallon.
