The Pershing County Mustangs rebounded from a tough start to the week to split a home doubleheader with North Tahoe in league baseball action.
Pershing County opened the week with a 10–0 road loss to the Lakers but bounced back at home, taking the first game of the doubleheader 11–7 before dropping the second contest 14–6.
Head coach Jared Jensen said the Mustangs showed resilience after the early setback.
“We came out Tuesday and struggled with our first road game,” Jensen said. “We rebounded to win the first of two at home against North Tahoe. We played them really tough, and our bats came back to life.”
The Mustangs faced several challenges during the series, including playing without starting catcher Jake Henderson due to injury, but several players stepped up.
Taylor Montes led Pershing County offensively, batting .700 across the three games, while Ayden Montes delivered a strong performance on the mound.
“Ayden Montes pitched a gem,” Jensen said.
Jensen said the team continues to develop despite having a relatively inexperienced roster.
“We have a lot of inexperience on our team, but this may be the most athletic baseball team we’ve had in a while,” Jensen said. “We’ve had a lot of production from our freshmen early on, and it’s really nice to see. It represents what our youth program has been accomplishing.”
Jensen said the Lakers are a strong program and provided a good early test for the Mustangs.
Pershing County continues league play this week, traveling to Incline before hosting the Highlanders in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. and noon. The Mustangs will also face Battle Mountain later this month in a home game, followed by a road doubleheader.
