Sewer Safety Concerns Lead Discussion at Imlay Town Board

Sewer Safety Concerns Lead Discussion at Imlay Town Board

Safety concerns surrounding the Imlay sewer system led discussion at the Feb. 16 meeting of the Imlay Town Board, as board members addressed an open excavation near the railroad that officials say poses a risk to children and animals.

Ed Urschel reported that the sewer line in the area had to be dug up due to improper installation by previous owners, which created multiple issues now being corrected. The excavation has left an open hole, prompting concern from board members about public safety.

Urschel recommended fencing off the area until repairs are complete. The St. Pierre family has volunteered to provide fencing materials, and town board members, along with several residents, plan to install the fencing on Feb. 20, weather permitting. Residents are urged to caution children to stay clear of the site. A separate sewer meeting is scheduled for March to continue addressing system concerns.

In other business, the board heard from Deb Whittaker, who provided information on CareSource, a nonprofit Medicaid insurance provider serving Nevadans age 64 and younger. Whittaker outlined several additional benefits available through the plan, including mental health apps and virtual support groups, free online tutoring for children ages 5 to 18, transportation assistance, a WorkConnect job support program, and complimentary car seats or Pack and Plays for participants in the Mom and Baby Beginnings program. Applications can be submitted online or in person.

Board members also approved installation of a basketball hoop at the park, which is expected to be set up soon. A work order is being processed to install a water spigot and drip line to support planned tree plantings. Additionally, a donation request has been submitted to SSR Mining for potential installation of swings and shade structures.

Chuck Sayles informed the board that the upcoming county commission meeting may include the selection of a new county manager. He also noted that the county has not yet appointed a permanent district attorney.

The next sewer-focused meeting will take place in March, with details to be announced.
