Bryce Shields Sworn in as 11th Judicial District Court Judge

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo has appointed Bryce Shields to serve as a judge in the 11th Judicial District Court, filling the vacancy that serves Pershing, Lander, and Mineral counties. Shields previously served as the Pershing County District Attorney and brings more than 17 years of experience in the district’s legal system.

The 11th Judicial District Court handles felony criminal cases, major civil matters, and family law cases across the three rural counties. Shields took the oath of office from Judge Bill Maddox and spoke of humility, gratitude, and a commitment to impartial service.

“I don’t have a speech prepared,” Shields said. “What I’m feeling is humility and gratitude for the opportunity and for the people I’ve worked with over the last 17 years. I promise to be impartial and to do this work with fairness and respect for everyone who comes before the court.”

The appointment follows the sudden passing of Judge Jim Shirley in October and ensures continuity in judicial operations for the district. Shields will serve until the next general election, when the seat will appear on the ballot.

Colleagues and community members at the announcement praised Shields’ familiarity with the district, its caseload, and its residents. As judge, he will oversee serious criminal prosecutions, complex civil litigation, and family law matters, managing a heavy workload while upholding the law.

“This is about serving the people of this district and upholding the law,” Shields said.
