Lovelock Animal Shelter Seeks Foster Homes as Capacity Nears Limit

The Lovelock Animal Shelter is putting out a call for foster homes as the number of animals in its care continues to rise. With kennels filling and winter approaching, staff say additional foster families are urgently needed to ensure that every dog and cat has a safe place to stay.

Fostering, even for a short period, helps reduce the length of time an animal spends in the shelter and opens space for new arrivals. Shelter staff say that each foster home directly increases their ability to rescue animals that may otherwise be turned away due to limited capacity.

“Every foster home is a lifeline,” staff said. “It gives us room to say yes when another animal needs help.”

Fostering can take many forms. Some families provide long-term care until an animal is adopted. Others take in mothers with litters, bottle-fed kittens or puppies, animals recovering from medical procedures, or pets needing a holiday or short-term stay. Programs such as sleepovers and doggie day outs offer even more options for residents who want to help without long-term commitment.

Shelter staff emphasize that fostering is deeply rewarding. Animals arriving at the shelter are often stressed or confused; time in a calm home environment helps them relax, learn routines, and show their real personalities to potential adopters. Foster families provide stability, socialization, and affection, all critical to helping a pet thrive.

“We provide the food, supplies, and support,” staff said. “You provide the love. And the animals absolutely bloom because of it.”

Residents who might be interested or who simply want to learn more about the process are encouraged to contact the shelter with questions. No previous fostering experience is required, and shelter staff will guide volunteers through each step.

The shelter hopes that with community support, every animal will have a warm, safe place to land this season.
