The Pershing County Mustangs are headed back to the big stage, the Class 2A State Championship at Allegiant Stadium, squaring up with the Needles Mustangs at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. By the time this paper hits your porch Wednesday morning, Mustang fans will already know whether Pershing County brought home the hardware, but here’s the rundown heading into the title matchup.
Pershing County (11–1) enters the championship on a seven-game winning streak and fresh off a 42–36 playoff victory over Lincoln County last Saturday. The Mustangs have been averaging a blistering 43 points per game — one of the top offensive marks in the division — and they’ve shown a knack for finishing strong in tight battles.
Needles (9–2) arrives with its own momentum after a gritty 18–12 win over Battle Mountain. The California-side Mustangs may sit lower in MaxPreps rankings, but they’ve proven they can punch above their weight and drag opponents into close, punishing games.
The two programs know each other well. Pershing County has beaten Needles three straight times since 2016, including a 30–22 victory earlier this season in September. But championship games have a way of ignoring history. Needles will be looking to flip the script, while Pershing County will try to extend its dominance and bring another state title back to Mustang country.
Both teams lean heavily on their ground game, and whoever controls the clock and the line of scrimmage, may be the one hoisting the trophy.
