Mustangs Punch Their Ticket to State After Thriller Against Lincoln County

Pershing County football is heading back to the big stage. After a nail-biter semifinal that had the Mustang crowd on its feet from kickoff to the final whistle, the boys in red and black clinched their spot in the 2025 NIAA Class 2A State Championship with a 42–36 win over the Lincoln County Lynx on Saturday.

The November 15 matchup was classic November football, tense, physical, and full of momentum swings. Lincoln County rolled in on a three-game winning streak, but the Mustangs weren’t interested in letting it stretch any further. Pershing County battled through every possession, answering Lynx drives with their own and refusing to break when it mattered most.

Saturday’s victory extended Pershing County’s win streak to seven straight, bringing their season record to 11–1. MaxPreps put it plainly: the Mustangs “didn’t miss a beat now that it's playoff time.”

If stats tell the story, the championship game should be a slugfest. Pershing County and Needles both come in with nearly identical defensive numbers, the Mustangs have been allowing just 12.8 points per game, Needles 12.2. Points will be earned the hard way, the way Nevada football was meant to be played.

Needles enters with a 9–2 record and plenty of talent, but Pershing County has momentum, muscle, and a community behind them that’s loud enough to fill Allegiant Stadium twice over.

The Mustangs will face the Needles Mustangs — yes, it’s Mustang vs. Mustang — on Tuesday, November 25, with kickoff at 9:00 a.m. inside Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders. For high school athletes, lining up on an NFL field is the kind of memory that sticks for a lifetime.

Fans can watch live on the NFHS Network, or tune in locally to a full championship broadcast thanks to community sponsors who stepped up fast.

Local attorney and Friday night game announcer Steve Evenson confirmed the championship game will air on AM 980 KVLV / 99.5 FM / KKTU, after dozens of community sponsors chipped in to cover travel, lodging, and production costs. Funds beyond the radio expenses will be donated to the PCHS girls’ soccer team, honoring kicker Riley for her halftime field goal during Saturday’s semifinal.

If there’s one thing Pershing County does well, it’s rally around its kids. Evenson and Safety Coordinator Dan Murphy will both travel to Las Vegas to bring the sounds of the championship home to Pershing County.

Coach Mike Brooks said this has been a great season. “The kids have earned their way to this point, they have faced some adversity with injuries and scoring deficits in games but they have continued to be positive and battle. For that, we couldn’t be prouder.”

He said they are preparing like any other week but luckily have a couple of extra days since they don’t play until Tuesday. “We played our opponent earlier in the season and it was a close game so we are preparing for that again,” he said.

With an 11–1 record, a semifinal victory earned through grit, and a town ready to storm Las Vegas with pride, Pershing County now takes aim at the ultimate prize.
