The Pershing County School District is working together with families and the broader community to define the skills and qualities every student should have by the time they graduate, not just academic success, but the character, confidence, and capability to thrive in life.
The Portrait of a Nevada Learner is a statewide vision that outlines the mindsets, skills, and values that Nevada wants every student to develop, beyond standard academic knowledge. It outlines qualities to help students grow, connect with others, make meaningful contributions, and thrive in a rapidly changing world. The Portrait of a Learner focuses on four main things: empowering, connecting, impacting, and thriving.
Students will answer questions based on the four main concepts, to help personalize and understand their learning. By asking, “How will I grow in my learning?” students can be empowered to take charge of their education. They will learn to understand their strengths, stay curious, take ownership of their learning, and seek balance in their intellectual, mental, social, and emotional well-being.
Students learn connection by asking themselves, “How do I build and sustain relationships and community?” They will learn to communicate well, listen actively, collaborate, and show empathy toward people of all backgrounds.
Students will also make a difference, and ask the question, “How will I contribute to make an impact?” Students will learn to think critically, solve problems, apply their knowledge, and get involved in their communities to make changes.
Students will learn how to succeed, and develop resilience, courage, adaptability, and integrity by answering the question, “How will I thrive?” They will learn how to face challenges, stay true to their values, and continue growing throughout life.
Overall, the Portrait of a Nevada Learner is intended to encourage students to understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters, and how it helps them become the person they aspire to be. By asking these questions, students can take initiative and actively engage in their education, as well as personalizing it to meet their individual needs.
To make sure this vision truly reflects Pershing County, the district is asking for community members to complete a survey.
Parents, community members, business owners, and students, the district wants to hear from you. What qualities do you believe are most important for learners to have when they leave the Pershing County schools? Your feedback will help guide the district’s next steps as they shape the future of the community. Please open your phone camera to use the QR code here that will take you to the survey..
