OLLI group tours Lovelock’s history

The Marzen House Museum teamed up with the University of Nevada’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) on Friday, October 24, to welcome a busload of 23 jovial visitors from Reno for an adventurous day exploring Lovelock. OLLI is an extended education program for adults over 50 who love to keep learning.

The tour began with a two-hour stop at the Marzen House Museum. Herding 23 curious visitors was “controlled chaos,” joked volunteer guides Frank Fisk, Darlene Vonsild, Gary Nance, and Jack Hursh. By the time the group boarded the bus to leave, conversation was buzzing—everyone was delighted by the museum experience.

Lunch followed at Temptations, where Wendy Nelson helped her father, Judge Richard Wagner, reconnect with one of his Hawthorne High School classmates, JoAnne Holmes, who happened to be among the tour group. The two graduated together with the Class of 1961 at Hawthorne. Judge Wagner later joined the group at the courthouse to give an engaging talk in the courtroom.

Next, while seated in the County Commission Chambers, Gary Nance shared a slide presentation about the “Uncovering of the Comstock Lode” mural in the Lovelock Post Office. Using his iPad, he showed photos and explained the mural’s restoration story. The group then posed for a photo on the courthouse steps before dashing to the historic Railroad Depot, where Wendy Nelson gave a brief history talk, somehow fitting all 23 people into her office.

The final stop was the Longhorn Bar, where visitors admired the 1954 George Perry original cowboy art and got a peek into the old speakeasy room.

As the group climbed back aboard the bus to Reno, one smiling participant summed up the day: “I’m having so much fun, I don’t want it to end.”
