The friendly competition drew a lively crowd, with plenty of chili, laughter, and a few surprises including a mechanical bull and a giant bounce house that kept kids (and a few brave adults) entertained all afternoon.
When the judging was done, Jack Gardner and Brent Tatum, owners of Cheers Taphouse, took home first place honors for their standout chili. Emily Schoenecker, representing the Grass Valley Fire Department, earned the event’s Overall Award, while Sarah Vara and her husband cooked their way to second place. The coveted People’s Choice Award went to Sandyn Johnson and her friends, whose crowd-pleasing recipe won over tasters throughout the day.
“Everyone brought their best and the community really showed up to support,” said Workman. “It was all about good food, good friends, and a lot of hometown fun.”
With delicious competition and laughter all around, the Grass Valley Chili Cook-Off once again proved that a little spice brings people together.
