The Pershing County Mustangs are living up to their powerhouse reputation once again. Coming
off last year’s Class 2A state championship and an undefeated 2024 season, the Mustangs are
storming through 2025 with commanding performances on both sides of the ball.
In their latest matchup, Pershing County shut out Yerington 60–0, adding another dominant win
to their record. Coach Mike Brooks said the team performed “well in all facets of the game,”
praising the effort and energy from every player.
Running back Ashton Jimenez led the offense with 111 yards rushing, while quarterback Ayden
Montes added two rushing touchdowns. On defense, Ramon Sanchez capped the night with a
defensive touchdown, sealing the lopsided victory in front of a large and enthusiastic home
crowd.
“That they play their hearts out every game is our ultimate goal,” Brooks said. “Win, lose or
draw, we don’t care as long as they’re giving effort. We can correct scheme issues and all that.
As long as they’re giving it their all, we’ll be in good shape.”
The Mustangs—featured this week in a Nevada Sports Net report by Chris Murray—are now
6–1 overall and 3–0 in league play after last week’s 46–0 win over Incline, a rematch of the 2024
state title game. They’ve outscored opponents 328–69 so far this season.
Pershing County’s success continues a storied legacy: 11 state championships, 14 state
tournament appearances in the last 16 seasons, and recent titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017,
2018, and 2024.
Quarterback Montes has completed 13 of 22 passes for 395 yards and seven touchdowns while
adding 232 rushing yards and two more scores. Trenton Rhodes has been another standout,
rushing for 574 yards and nine touchdowns while also leading the defense with 26 tackles and
two sacks.
With a strong veteran lineup, emerging young talent, and the community’s backing, the Mustangs
have their eyes firmly set on another deep playoff run—and perhaps another trophy for
Lovelock.
