The Lovelock City Council tackled a full slate of community-focused topics at its July 15 regular meeting, with passionate public input and steady action across several key issues.
Mustang Youth Team Gets Go-Ahead for Dog Park Grant
The Mustang Youth Team (MYT), in partnership with Frontier Community Coalition, received unanimous approval to apply for a grant through the T-Mobile Hometown Grant program to build a community dog park at Amherst (Strip) Park. The team also received a letter of support from the City. The park will include fencing, benches, and waste stations—at no cost to the city—and is part of MYT’s broader mission of youth-led civic improvement.
Smoking Banned in City Parks
In response to a request from MYT and community members, the Council held a public hearing and voted to adopt a new ordinance banning smoking and tobacco use in all public parks. The ordinance designates violations as infractions and encourages voluntary compliance through signage and peer accountability. One parent shared how she and her young children picked up thousands of cigarette butts during a cleanup event last year, calling the measure “a long time coming.”
Rezoning Complaint Spurs Discussion
The Council also heard from a long-time Lovelock resident, Sandra Hyde, who raised concerns about a Lovelock Meadows Water District building recently constructed next to her home. The speaker alleged that the rezoning process lacked proper public notice and that the new structure violates setback requirements under the city’s master plan. She requested written responses and corrective action from the city and the water district. City attorney Sean Rowe acknowledged the concern and pledged to review the issues and respond formally.
Nuisance Code Adopted, Council Restructures Meeting Schedule
Council members voted to adopt a simplified nuisance ordinance designed to streamline complaint resolution and give staff authority to act quickly on code violations. The ordinance allows residents to appeal staff decisions to the Council.
In another policy update, the Council changed its regular meeting schedule to the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 5:30 p.m., citing scheduling conflicts and a desire to improve public participation.
City Website Refreshed, Community Invited to Celebrate Local Yards
City Clerk Nicole Reitz shared that the city website has been updated with easier navigation and a new community slideshow featuring photos submitted by residents.
