On Friday, June 20, at approximately 1:53 p.m., Pershing County dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a brush fire burning in the median along Interstate 80 near mile marker 94, driven eastward by winds gusting up to 25 mph.
Sheriff Sergeant 104 responded immediately, and Lovelock Fire quickly mobilized units. Engine 553 was in route by 1:55 p.m. and arrived on scene at 2:08 p.m., followed by Engine 555, which arrived at approximately 2:18 p.m. Fire Chief Rodney Wilcox (Unit 501) joined the response shortly after and requested additional support from the Bureau of Land Management.
BLM crews from Station 3 were already on their way and arrived with two engines at 2:21 p.m., just as Fire Chief Wilcox reached the scene. Thanks to swift coordination among local and federal agencies, the fire was knocked down by 2:37 p.m. and declared fully extinguished by 3:14 p.m.
The fire burned approximately two-tenths of a mile along the highway median. No injuries were reported.
