Trap shoot Honors Mike DeWitt’s Legacy, Awards Scholarships and Draws Big Crowd

The second annual Mike DeWitt Scholarship Fund Shoot brought together more than 200 people from across Nevada and neighboring states on Saturday, June 14, at the Flying Saucer Trap Club in Lovelock. Hosted by the Pershing County Chukars Unlimited, the event combined fierce competition with heartfelt community spirit—and raised funds to support educational opportunities for local youth.

A total of 24 teams competed in the event, which featured 50 singles and 50 handicap targets per shooter. Participants traveled from as far as Colorado, Idaho, and California, joining shooters from Fallon, Reno, Winnemucca, Elko, and Yerington, in addition to a strong showing from the Lovelock community.

The event honors the late Mike DeWitt, a beloved local sportsman and advocate for youth shooting programs. Proceeds from the event support the scholarship fund established in his name.

Two local students, Tyler Miller and Jacob Burke were awarded Mike DeWitt Flying Saucer Scholarships. The scholarships were presented by club treasurer Steve Foster during a break in the competition.

Top shooters earned buckles, cash prizes, and bragging rights across several divisions. Ian Paredes had an impressive day, taking home High Overall Youth and helping secure a 1st Place B Class Team finish alongside teammates Bubba Kincheloe, Hailey Kincheloe, Joey Gottschalk, and Mike Gottschalk

Karen Hogue earned the title of High Overall Female Shooter, while Schye Larson claimed 2nd Place Female honors. In Class A, the team of Mike Kincheloe, Matt McFarland, Sean Erb, Brandon Yost, and Tad Osmand secured a 3rd Place finish.

In true small-town fashion, a group of local girls set up a lemonade stand to keep shooters refreshed, while the Chukars provided a free BBQ lunch for all participants and guests. A massive raffle added to the day’s excitement, offering prizes donated by local supporters and businesses.

Organizers emphasized that events like this not only celebrate marksmanship but also strengthen community ties and create lasting memories. “It’s a great way to bring people together,” said one club member. “And Mike would’ve loved seeing so many young people out here learning, competing, and having fun.”
