Extension to Host High Tunnel Growing Workshop Sept. 19

The University of Nevada, Reno Extension will host a High Tunnel Educational Workshop on September 19 at its Churchill County office in Fallon, offering growers across the region a chance to learn about hoop house and high tunnel growing — a climate-smart method for producing crops in Nevada’s arid conditions.

The workshop is free to attend and open to anyone interested in local food production, whether backyard gardeners or experienced producers. Funded through a grant secured by the Extension team in collaboration with state agriculture educators, the event will include hands-on learning sessions followed by a guided farm tour.

“If you attend in person, you get to join the farm tour, and that’s always the best part,” said Extension educator Colby Burke during a recent county commission update.

High tunnels, also known as hoop houses, are low-cost, passive greenhouse structures that extend growing seasons, protect crops from wind and weather, and can significantly boost productivity for rural and urban growers alike.

The event begins at the UNR Extension office in Fallon and concludes with the farm tour at a nearby demonstration site.

For those unable to travel, a live webinar broadcast will also be available. Registration for the online option is open at:

To promote the event, Extension staff will be handing out seed packets with registration information at the upcoming Frontier Days festival.

“It’s a great way to connect growers and gardeners from across the state,” Burke said. “And to give them the tools to succeed.”
