“May the 4th Be with You” isn’t just for Star Wars fans this year—it’s also the theme of the Pershing County Youth Livestock Show, happening on Saturday, May 4, 2025, starting at 8 a.m. The event celebrates sustainable agriculture, hands-on education, and the hard work of local youth from Pershing County 4-H and Nile Valley FFA.
Students will showcase months of dedication as they present rabbits, goats, sheep, swine, and beef in front of professional judges. Awards will be given to youth who demonstrate excellence in animal preparation and handling. Though poultry will not be judged due to current state veterinarian restrictions, there will still be a fun, educational exhibit for feathered friends.
Behind the cute costumes and clever Star Wars theme is a serious commitment to sustainably raised livestock. Today’s consumers care deeply about the source of their food - its health benefits, environmental impact, and ethical treatment. For decades, youth programs like 4-H and FFA have been ahead of the curve, teaching these principles through experience.
Participants in the show don’t just care for animals, they track feed schedules, medical treatments, financial inputs, and daily activities. Many have even taken to TikTok or Instagram to share their journey, raising awareness about what goes into producing high-quality meat and learning to tell their story as young agricultural entrepreneurs.
“This is more than a show,” said Colby Burke, 4-H Coordinator at the Nevada Pershing County Extension Office. “It’s a chance for the community to support kids who are developing real-world skills in responsibility, leadership, and sustainable food production.”
For many of the animals, this won’t be their first appearance—some were featured in the recent Ag Field Day, where 4-H and FFA members led hands-on demos for younger students.
Community members are encouraged to attend the show, sponsor awards, or even purchase project animals at the sale. Contributions go directly toward supporting youth education and the future of Nevada agriculture.
