The Pershing County girls 4x200-meter relay team turned in one of the Mustangs’ strongest performances of the season Saturday at the Fallon Elks Invitational, helping lead a day filled with personal records and competitive results against larger schools.
Camilla García, Chealse Woodard, Ali Montes and Khloe Montes shaved three seconds off their previous time, finishing in 1 minute, 56 seconds. That mark currently ranks as the second-fastest time in the 2A classification this season.
Woodard also delivered an outstanding individual performance in the long jump, placing second overall with a personal-best leap of 15 feet, 10¾ inches. That jump currently stands as the top mark in the 2A this year.
Pole vault, which returned to the Mustangs last season after several years without competitors, continues to grow this year with Laura Gomez, Ashton Jimenez and Howard Mitchell representing Pershing County in the event.
Gomez leaped seven feet in the competition, a personal best.
On the boys' side, Jimenez soared 9-06.00, and Mitchell cleared nine feet for the Mustangs.
While the boys' 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams finished fifth overall, their times remain among the best in the 2A classification.
The boys' 4x200-meter relay team of Ashton Jimenez, Anthony Gibson, Quinton McKinney and Aaron Zelaya currently holds the fastest time in 2A.
The 4x100 team of Gibson, McKinney, Jonathan Baker and Josiah Hunt ranks second, trailing only Battle Mountain.
Jaxson Happy had a standout day for the Mustangs, setting personal records in the open 200 meters and the 300-meter hurdles. He also made a strong showing in the long jump, improving his personal best by nearly a foot with a jump of 18 feet, 3 inches.
Freshman Elijah Dickerman also continued to show promise, recording a personal-best throw of more than 33 feet in the shot put during just his second meet of the season.
The Mustangs have about 20 athletes competing this spring, including five seniors, Josiah Hunt, Ashton Jimenez, Laura Gomez, Chealse Woodard and Sugeily Valtierra, who provide leadership and experience for the team.
With several personal records and strong relay performances at one of their toughest meets of the season, the Mustangs will look to build on that momentum when they travel to Battle Mountain on Friday, March 27, before hosting a meet on their home track on Friday, April 3.
