The Pershing County Mustangs turned in a strong week on the diamond, sweeping Battle Mountain in three games, including a dramatic walk-off victory at home.
On Tuesday, March 17, the Mustangs hosted Battle Mountain and edged the Longhorns 5–4 in a tightly contested game. Ayden Montes earned the win on the mound, and the drama came when Trenton Rhodes delivered a walk-off single to score Montes and secure the win.
At the plate, Logan Hunt led the Mustangs with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Ayden Montes and Thomas Brooks each collected two hits. Trenton Rhodes and Colton Diaz each drove in runs to help secure the narrow win.
Pershing County carried that momentum into a road doubleheader on March 21, defeating Battle Mountain 8–5 in the first game before closing out the series with a 17–5 win in the second game.
Coach Jared Jensen praised the team’s overall effort throughout the week.
“We had a really good outing this week against Battle Mountain,” Jensen said. “Anytime you can sweep the Longhorns, it's a great week.”
Jensen noted strong performances both at the plate and on the mound, highlighting Ayden Montes’ contributions.
“Ayden had a great outing pitching and a great week batting,” Jensen said.
The Mustangs also received strong pitching performances from Trenton Rhodes and Taylor Montes throughout the series, while the middle of the lineup produced consistently in each game.
“We saw a big performance from the middle of our lineup every game that helped push us over,” Jensen said. “These kids fought hard Tuesday.”
With the three wins, Pershing County improved to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in league play.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to another tough opponent, as West Wendover (4–6 overall, 3–3 in the 2A Northern league) travels to Lovelock this weekend.
“We have a very challenging West Wendover team coming to town that will be one of our toughest challenges yet,” Jensen said.
