The Pershing County High School baseball team swept a three-game series from Incline High School last week, winning 17-1, 14-4 and 17-2.

Coach Jared Jensen said the Mustangs played well in all phases during the series.

“We played very solid overall,” Jensen said. “We saw some big pitching performances from our pitchers and played good defense behind them. Our bats were solid throughout the series.”

The series opened at Greater Nevada Field, the home of the Reno Aces, where the Mustangs pounded out 14 hits in a 17-1 win.

Houston Allen had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Ayden Montes drove in three runs and recorded both a double and a triple, while Taylor Montes also had two hits and three RBIs. Trenton Rhodes added two hits, including a double, and scored twice, and Amare Rosas contributed three RBIs for the Mustangs.

Pershing County carried that momentum into the two home games, winning both to complete the sweep.

Taylor Montes continued to lead the Mustangs offensively. After missing the last two seasons because of injury, Montes is batting .667 over the past two weeks.

Trenton Rhodes also had a strong week at the plate, batting .667, while Houston Allen hit .571.

On the mound, Ayden Montes picked up two wins during the week, allowing no earned runs while walking none and striking out 11 in six innings pitched.

Jensen also credited Houston Allen for stepping up defensively at shortstop when needed and praised catcher Amari Rosas for strong play behind the plate over the past two weeks.

With the sweep, Pershing County improved to 8-2, the Mustangs’ best start since 2016.

Pershing County hosted Battle Mountain High School earlier this week, but results were not available at press time. The Mustangs travel to Battle Mountain on Saturday to complete the series and keep their strong start going.
