On Feb. 7, 2026, the Mustangs became regional champions after winning the NIAA Class 2A Northern Nevada Wrestling Tournament. Pershing County finished first with a team score of 236.5, outpacing Battle Mountain, which placed second with 187 points. This victory marks the second regional championship in school history for the Mustangs and their first since 2019.
The team was led by four individual champions, including James Goerge at 120 pounds, Jeffrey Elerick at 144, Israel Knight at 165, and Anthony Gibson at 190. Many other athletes also qualified for state, including Ayden Anderson, Jaxson Happy, Thomas Brooks, Brayden Baca, Houston Allen, Cade Liebsack, and Lorne Maita. Mustangs Rylie Burt, Braylen Tupa, Josh Elerick, Patrick Mitchell, and Zachary Charles also competed in the tournament and contributed to the team’s overall success.
With the regional title secured, Pershing County will compete at the state wrestling championships, scheduled for Feb. 13-14 in Winnemucca.
