The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to take simple precautions as thefts from vehicles continue to be one of the most common crimes reported locally and across Nevada. Law enforcement officials say many of these crimes are opportunistic, with thieves targeting unlocked vehicles or cars where valuables are visible. Even brief stops at stores, gyms, or private residences can turn into a loss if vehicles are left unsecured.
Residents are encouraged to lock vehicle doors every time they park, remove keys from the vehicle, and avoid leaving valuables such as purses, wallets, phones, tools, firearms, or cash in plain sight. When possible, items should be locked in the trunk before arriving at a destination or taken inside.
An unlocked vehicle with visible belongings can quickly lead to smashed windows, stolen property, or even vehicle theft, creating additional hardship through insurance claims and police reports.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity around vehicles or becomes the victim of a theft is urged to report it immediately. Emergencies should be reported by calling 911. Non-emergency reports can be made to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 273-2641.
Officials say small habits, like locking vehicles, can make a significant difference in reducing preventable crime and helping keep neighborhoods safe.
